Dr. Michael Burke
Dr. Michael Burke is the CEO and founder of Emergence Treatment and Research. He is a graduate of the Medical College of Georgia and Duke University’s psychiatry residency program. Over his 31-year career he was in academic psychiatry where he was recognized as a well-published researcher and teacher for community psychiatry and psychiatric issues of the medically ill. He is Board Certified in both General Psychiatry and the field of Behavioral Medicine. As the psychiatrist for the Winship Cancer Center, a founding member of the South Florida Multidisciplinary Prostate Cancer Clinic, and a consultation psychiatrist at Emory and Grady Hospital he developed expertise in treating psychiatric issues in the medically ill as well as understanding medical illnesses that can present with mental health issues.
Dr. Burke has extensive experience in the severely mentally ill where he has directed programs for the treatment- resistant patient and has had national leadership roles in the care of the homeless mentally ill. He also has been a leader in the treatment of veterans and has expertise in PTSD for both combat and civilian patients. During his career he has trained numerous medical professionals in best practice models of psychopharmacology and psychotherapies. In the last ten years he was an early pioneer of telepsychiatry in Georgia. Recently he was awarded the highest membership honor bestowed by the American Psychiatric Association - Distinguished Fellowship.
